Run-DMC’s self-titled debut album is a no-messing hip-hop classic. Released in 1984, there is not an inch of fat on this record, just sparse and direct drum machine beats and bold Queens flows, plus subtle scratching and sampling from Jam Master Jay. Run–DMC's debut album is 34 years old but there's something about the magical combination of hard, minimal beats and the back and forth rap stylings of Run and DMC that never gets old. OK, maybe the guitar on "Rock Box" recalls the worst of eighties hair metal, but in general the debut album sets the template that would form the basis of some of Run DMC's best songs and those of the many groups they inspired. No Run DMC no Eric B & Rakim or Beastie Boys. Plus "Sucker MCs" remains one of the all time greatest hip hop beats and vocal performances. They mad better albums after this but it's impossible to ignore what a landmark album this is.
