Proper no-messing hardcore punk from the dirty underside of Sydney, Australia. White Dog tick all the boxes: driving rhythmic chug, nihilistic macho-bloke shouting, and a 16 track / sub-30 minute tracklisting. Sydney Limits is the band’s debut full-length, released on CD and 45RPM-cut 7” by the Agitated label.

This is some straight up hardore bollocks from Sydney, which of course gives rise to an adjustment period where I try to anticipate not Yorkshire skramz but Australian ones. Going in on some of the genre’s traditions -- such as liking Black Flag, worshipping the riff you came up with on the sofa last Sunday as if it’s the best ever, and sampling random shit (on this record it’s dogs barking and people saying “shut up!”) to pad things out -- ‘Sydney Limits’ comes out the other end an extremely fun thing.
I know it’s cliche to call a no frills hardcore band “tight” but it’s pretty much how I feel about the very tight White Dog: their sound is akin to Metz in its noisy but rigid schematics, the band driving hard but straight on a tune like “Beyond Repair”, which has a good gang chant and then goes down the middle with a thumping rhythm section onslaught. The breakdowns are few, in honesty, ‘cos the band just wanna keep fucking keeping on -- “Beyond Repair” hints at an old-school hook that’s Black Flag kindred in its chorus but its forward-momentum thrash feels more Gallows in its dissonant but coherent movements.
This is one for those of you who feel like your hardcore should be misanthropic and mean, since they fucking hate whoever they’re avoiding on the phone on “Hard For You”, where they get kinda horrible talking about how much shit they wanna put someone through -- while playing some pretty wonky guitar solos to offset the final kiss off of feedback. Timeout please. Catchy as fuck record though; the bass lines are the real winner.
9/10 Graham Brown Customer review, 26th January 2017
White Dog is the chained up mongrel bred when music is sufficated by a conservative supressing political system and where curfews and lack of venues unleash anger and attitude which their album Sydney Limits unleashes.
There is nothing new here but why should there be.These guys are pissed and its that vitriol that drives this record.Behind the Aussie drawel is a band sick of rising rents, lockout laws and the australian dream just fading into a cliche.Think Chopper more than Mick Dundee or the Minogues.
