It may not be the most well-known of Bernard Herrmann’s scores (hello Psycho), but the score for Hitchcock’s North by Northwest perfectly captures the composer’s ability to blend melodic and atonal elements, creating tense, engaging and avant garde pieces for large orchestra. Now it’s been beautifully repressed on double vinyl LP from Silva Screen.

North by Northwest (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Bernard Herrmann

9/10 Jack 12th December 2016

For a very long time Bernard Hermann's score for North by Northwest was unjustly neglected and even considered unimportant because it was written for a film with lighter intent than some of Hitchcock's darker works like Vertigo and Psycho and had a strong romantic theme with a basically happy ending. It took time but is finally recognised for the extraordinary score that it is, perfectly capturing the mood of confusion, suspense and paranoia, and moments of longing and tenderness. This is mostly music of tension and suspense, notably the staccato theme played by woodwinds and brass.
