Minor Victories, the Mogwai / Slowdive / Editors supergroup, released their debut album together to great acclaim in 2016. This new release shows off the breadth of scope and vision that the group possesses, being a full-length suite of Orchestral Variations on the whole album. A different side to Minor Victories. Out on Play It Again Sam.
7/10 Jamie Staff review, 24 January 2017
That Minor Victories album from last year, then… from last Summer… you remember that don’t you? You liked it. Well, our Clint did and so did Ian (of course). It’s what the [..word we never use..] word ‘epic’ was meant for. Stadium-ready and filled to the rafters with big string sections and anthemic songs.
Well, here are and I just know you’ve all been waiting for this like the slavering wolves you are the ‘Orchestral Variations’. That’s versions of those songs -- songs which I may, just may have forgotten by now, that’s all I’m saying done purely instrumentally. You know, with strings and such. And Olafur Arnalds type arrangements with insistently heartfelt piano. Very pretty in a big, expansive way. I can imagine these rising and swelling sounds filling out venues such as the Albert Hall or Royal Festival Hall. They probably already have… I am unable to confirm this at the moment.
Anyway, these melodies are (finally) worming their way into my heart. ‘The Thief’ is particularly beautiful given the full neo-classical treatment. Sad Richter-like strings and everything. My invisible boss is calling now, must dash.
