Shame are a kinda sleazy rock band who have been working the circuit in London. Their sound has swagger and groove and a little bit of spite. Their new single Gold Hole / The Lick is a 7” release, packaged in a white disco bag that has been die-cut especially for the purpose. From Fnord Communications.

We're selling a shed load of these and on the evidence of what I'm listening to it's really hard to see what the fuss is about. 'Gold Hole' starts promising enough with some guitar tones that evoke Adam and the Ants ' Xerox' before the whole thing turns into some kind of sleazy metal circus where it's ok to sing in a bark half Joe Strummer half James Hetfield. It has an eerie Sisters of Mercy feel to it and is a grimey and dirty and sleazy but also rather awful.
'The Lick' is better with some deep sludgy atmospherics and spoken word vocals that erupt into the chorus Shaun Ryder might have come up with had he been fronting the Birthday Party. There's more on this track to suggest there might be something special about this lot. The guitars are terrifying and create stinking atmosphere's but something is lost when they try to reach a crescendo.
What usually happens is that a single like this comes in, we shrug our shoulders and say 'what?' then they either go on to rule the world or never be heard from again. The former is still possible but if their live shows are as incendiary as has been indicated then they are going to have to sort themselves out on record first.

Shame have been part of the great Brixton music scene for a while now adn this is there debut release. On its A side is the great track "The Lick", this songs features a great pummeling chorus and is full of The Fall and Fat White Family esque guitars and raw powerful vocals. On the B side is the sublime "The Lick" this track begins with a great spoken word verse before hitting you in the face with the chorus. This is an incredibly promising single from a great band, i cannot wait to see what they do next.
