A seasonal EP from yellow6, featuring a jumble of material that has been worked on over the course of this year. merry6mas2016 pushes the definition of an EP somewhat by being 75 minutes in length, but who’s complaining when that means lots more tasty material? Edition of 100 CDs on the Silber label, with each package in a randomly coloured linocut sleeve.

8/10 Staff review, 30 November 2016

I don't know about anyone else but for me the advent of Christmas is marked not by the John Lewis ad or the Coca Cola lorry getting stuck down narrow side streets but by the annual unveiling of the Yellow6 CD. This magical event has been so familiar to us here at Norman Records that if in any year it fails to happen then I think we're going to have to pack up and go home. It's one of the few things you can rely on in an increasingly crazy world.

I always enjoy listening to Yellow 6's music. When I say 'listen' I mean 'skim through' as there's 75 minutes of beautiful guitar textures here which I have about 5 minutes to tell you about before I get told to go and pack another parcel. Not much time for a full the Wire - style appraisal but you'll be happy to know that this is just as atmospheric as other Yellow6 releases. The opening 'Custom' sounds like one of Low's long drawn out slowly descending into winter tracks. 'DB' has drums (yikes!) and is gorgeously La Bradfordian and elsewhere there are lovely sprawling examples of the sort of minimal Durutti Column-esque experiments Jon Atwood does best.

Textural atmospheric music for deepest midwinter and always most welcome in these ears.
