The new Saroo Brierly film Lion has Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel in central roles and Hauschka and Dustin O'Halloran on the soundtrack. O'Halloran is an experienced film soundtrack composer, whereas melodic prepared-piano tinkerer Hauschka is more often sighted in experimental music contexts, but the pairs different angles intersect wonderfully here. Lion starts with the only song in the movie, a new track from Sia called "Never Give Up", which is rather catchy. Of course in the movie it plays over the end titles, but I can see why for commercial reasons this song is placed up front, rather than in the back, of the soundtrack. Given the background of both composers, I'm surprised that we didn't get more minimalist type of music. The soundtrack closes with a reflective "Mother", with violin and piano. In all, this is a very nice score, and it seems to me that we haven't heard the last of these guys.
