8/10 Jamie Staff review, 15 November 2016
Bristol-London collective Amp, then: a band formed in the early nineties based around core members Richard Walker (The Secret Garden) and Karine Charff. This disc, 'Switched on and Live', features nine tracks recorded live at four different venues in Bristol, London and Breda in the Netherlands, and has all the atmospheric charm and slightly lo-fi sonics you’d expect from clubs like the Hope Centre in 1995 and the Luna in 1999.
Third Eye Foundation’s Matt Elliott provides his trademark squally-ambient guitar textures and Matt Jones is on bass for the earliest of the recordings included here. Whereas there the sound was a little muddy, on track 4 ‘Blind Man’s Bluff’ we can hear Karine’s clarion, delicious and seductive vocal in its full glory set against Richard’s gloriously melancholic guitar. These are records of times and performances which will bring back many a happy moment for the fans who were fortunate enough to have been there, as well as providing a luxuriously hazy soundtrack for the less familiar.
Very good (droney floatiness for those who like grit) then. On Sound in Silence, in their usual deluxe in-house style, 200 of these hand-made and numbered babies.
