Without a new Slade record this year it has been up to creaking indie 'legends' the Haywains to bring us a Christmas record. You can count the amount of good Christmas songs on the digits of one hand and this one isn't going to add to the festive pile as it's unremittingly horrendous- as sickly sweet as a gallon of egg nog washed down with a box of liqueurs. It's kind of like Calvin Johnson singing along with an off colour Heavenly...about Christmas and to top it all some innocent little children have been dragged in to sing the final chorus. Those poor kids - will someone please think of the children?
Overleaf they've taken on 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' which gives me a gift idea for the Haywains from the big man himself....a guitar tuner. Despite my ears knowing full well they can never recover from this I can't hate it with any kind of real passion. It's Christmas for God sake. Good will to all men. Even veteran indie pop bands.
