Dylan Golden Aycock is one of those guitar-playing types who manages to effortlessly overcome the enormous baggage accumulated by that instrument and push straight through to gorgeous clarity. Church Of Level Track dabbles in American Primitive and country sounds, with a slightly psychedelic backbone running throughout. A quality LP, released in an edition of 500 on the Scissor Tail Editions label.

The first pressing of Dylan Golden Aycock's first LP was limited to 14 hand numbered lathe cut X-Rays housed in laser cut jackets with letter-pressed Inserts cut onto the original X-Ray's from his fathers heart attack. No such shenanigans this time round just 500 numbered LPs containing more examples of his excellent fingerpicked guitar compositions.
His playing style is somewhere betwixt John Fahey, Michael Chapman and James Blackshaw and on the opening ‘Lord It Over’ he adds drums to the brew as the track veers from lonely back porch picking to something that sounds more like the twisty post-rock of Pullman.
Even more lonesome and more effective is ‘Arkansas River’ a beautiful piece of sun dappled rural bliss with marvellous understated pedal steel running through it. ‘Hurry Autumn’ is a quick paced romp through Glenn Jones territory with fingers akimbo as again the pedal steel nestles in the distance.
Aycock’s fingerpicking skills may be at the forefront here but I’m really loving how he’s blended in the pedal steel. It provides a much needed warmth behind the stark compositions and is used mostly as atmosphere but it’s a clever touch drifting in and out of the mix. Aycock keeps things warm and melodic throughout and only closer ‘Scratch the Chisel’ feels more discordant and scratchy.
