Re-issued by London label Fuzz Club on limited edition 180g black vinyl, Tales of Murder and Dust are back with their first LP, “Hallucination of Beauty”, originally released in 2012. Indeed, the Danish band, whose seismic amalgam of varied instrumentation and hallucinogenic psychedelia, return with this climactic heavyweight of an album.

Here we go with this week’s Fuzz Club review, wherein I shout at the top of my lungs about how the label has really branched out to anyone not already endearing their mouse to the “add from cart” button. This week the label offers up Tales of Murder and Dust, a melancholic soundscape of few words and heavy hearts. It’s a psychedelic tone poem, with less of the hypnotic riffs in favour of a blanket of ambient rock ‘n’ roll, coated in a lo-fi production that makes it all sound like one beautiful, distorted memory. I believe the word you’re looking for is nostalgia?
For real, though, this is a pretty thing, guitars fogged up amidst the textures and production, often distorted, sometimes acoustic and mostly coated with reverb. Instead of any psychedelic gatekeepers, this record most specifically reminds me of ColdWorld’s ‘Melancholie’, a snowed under black metal record that took it’s genres conventions apart in favour of delicate, hard-won melodies. The tiny riff on “Dead Eyes” brings together what otherwise sounds like a rumination of chords and noise and dislocation percussion, while the lopsided bass, acoustic pickings and waltzing synth of “Desert Flower” suggest enough balladry in what otherwise is an open field of sound. It’s dense, in other words, and that makes the moments of clarity all the more compelling.
You ain’t heard Fuzz Club release a song as pretty as “Darlin’ 61”, anyway -- those thick strums and that lament for strings is probably going to break your heart for at least a lunchbreak. It’s a sad record but it sounds hopeful too -- sorta like darkwave learning to really live.
