Neuicide! by Al Lover

7/10 Clinton Staff review, 10 January 2017

Even the press release which is supposed to be selling the damn thing makes reference to "today’s nostalgia-drenched underground music scene" and surely soon we are going to at some point see the moment where psych rock eats itself. Can we worship innovative at the time '70s drone rock bands to an even bigger degree? Well it turns out Al Lover manages to make something that combines Neu and Suicide but also combines their logo on the sleeve. I remember mocking the 'Don't Look Back' concerts when they were started. "Who" I sneered, "would want to sit through a performance of an album they already know". If at this time next year there is a record called Can Werk then please come back to me and we'll go round to Al Lover's house and hit him.

What's the music actually like then? Well not bad. If it weren't for the obvious referencing I probably wouldn't have mentioned either Suicide or Neu on the A side which is a long drone of squelchy electronics with some quite enjoyable twiddles. Overleaf I have to admit yes that's a blindingly obvious Neu pulse overladen with some fizzing electronics. No vocals though so lets forget about that bit. It's good enough to be enjoyed by anyone with a love of kraut and kosmische synth wanderings.

But also it's a novelty. So go buy.
