Never Mind The Bucket is a live recorded, compilation album from the band Officer!. The recorded setlist includes songs from the band’s album Dead Unique as well as some very well constructed covers. The album is both humorous and marvellously clever, showing Mick Hobbs’ personality at its greatest. Available on Vinyl LP.

7/10 Robin Staff review, 24 January 2017

Slightly left of field on the Blackest Ever Black imprint is the comedy stylings of Mick Hobbs, who fronts the Beefheart-influenced stand-up trope Officer!. The mind boggles, listening to this stuff, which was recorded live at a BEB concert in London. I don’t think he’s very funny, personally, but his music sloshes along lines of tweedom between Tindersticks, the Divine Comedy, taking a bit of free rock influence from Van Vliet along the way while stringing along a couple of lovely melodies here and there.

The humour is maybe derived best from the juxtaposition of an absolutely lovely band of musicians making gorgeous pastoral pop arrangements and Hobbs sort of warbling along with a home counties song-natter. Flutes, brass and lovely, Belle & Sebastian-styled guitars mingle as he nasals his way into long stories, so much so that listening to a tune like “Life At the Water’s Edge” becomes a sort of argument with oneself as to whether you’re listening to lovely soft rock or a ridiculous joke.

It’s a little bit like if someone with the best music taste ever ran a joke shop, I guess? The music is great at its most plaintive and on-the-line hilarious at its silliest (whether it’s with funny or at funny). They like to explain what every song is before they play it and I appreciate them keeping me up to date with their current affairs.
