Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence was a 1983 film focused around prisoners of war in Japan, which starred David Bowie. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s soundtrack garnered a fair amount more attention than the film itself, winning a BAFTA, which is fair enough with it’s incredibly unique instrumentation and dynamics. Features David Sylvian’s lyrics and vocals on Forbidden Colors.

This is the soundtrack to the 1983 feature film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. Sakamoto, who was in the now-legendary New Wave/synth group Yellow Magic Orchestra, composed and performed the entire evocative score. Additionally, Sakamoto starred as a Japanese POW camp commandant, along with British POW's Tom Conti and David Bowie. As good as the film is, the soundtrack is stunning, especially the title track; it's haunting, mesmerising, and powerful. Wonderful music whether or not you've seen the movie.
