Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins by John Lennon / Yoko Ono

Two Virgins is generally known as one of the least popular albums John Lennon was ever involved with: yay! Yoko Ono’s avant-art practices are clearly the heaviest influence here on this abstract suite of musique concrete, bird-song, conversation and other less-than-traditionally-musical sounds. Excellent to see it reissued by Secretly Canadian!

This album really sounds like nothing that ever came before it. It isn't an easy album to love but is an important part of the Beatles legacy. Two Virgins completely deconstructs the concept of what music is and puts it back together sideways. Is it pleasant? Hell no! Many find it unlistenable and even the few who do appreciate it most likely don't listen to it often. For me, though, when I'm in the mood to listen it transports me to another world in a way only achieved by the likes of Metal Machine Music.
