Strange moments in Norman Records history part 443. Reviewing a record on headphones that sounds like Alexander O'Neal whilst the very same record plays out over the big speakers.
If, like me, after three weeks of listening to Magic Soul FM you are starting to hear the same songs just a little too often then you could do worse than check out the slick '80s soul at work on this debut from soul-lite loving Australian duo.
The opening title track has more than a hint of Anita Baker in it's sweet vocal delivery and haunting synth chords, 'Start it Over' has similar jazzy soul vibes but the band are anything but an Anita Baker tribute band. On 'This Time' they play a jazz funk instrumental ready and waiting to be showcased at your nearest wine bar. I'm sometimes reminded of the latter day wanderings of Chic when they'd kinda lost their mojo. This is particularly true of the boxy funk of closer 'Too Much' when Benny Badge takes over the vocals.
It's an enjoyable facsimile of 80's slick funk bands like Loose Ends for those who have been craving such a thing.
