If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is either an album or a mixtape, but whatever it is, it grabbed the whole internet’s attention when it suddenly dropped without warning last year. Drake can certainly play the game. Now this high-grade release gets pressed to wax for a double LP issue on Island.

I don’t really have anything to do right now, which makes a change, so I’m just going to write some arbitrary words about my favourite of the Drake records. For some reason unbeknownst to this humble record store cog, Island are issuing lots of his records but not ‘Nothing Was The Same’, so the next best thing is ‘If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late’, which is a decent meme and excellent record.
With its kinda confusing half-mixtape, half-record legacy, this record feels both like a stumbling block and a complete package, and shines with songs that feel both majestic and thrown the fuck off: “Legend” slithers into its golden status, its beat slotting into place while Drake ambles off into the distance. “Know Yourself” has a delightfully churning hook that comes between an extended lackadaisical verse and a prime field recording interlude. “Energy” sees him sleepwalk out lines that feel at least Drake-context iconic.
The second half of the albumtape is a surprising winner, in that it creeps up into the same quality as the first, which is nice -- despite largely carrying on with the same production roster, it feels different, more conversational and occasionally a lot brighter. It's truly a great record that nobody anywhere needed Norman Records to write about in, any way, whatsoever.
