New sounds from David August. The Spell jumps off from his previous work into a delicate blend of breakbeats and abstract sound-spaces: a curious mixture for all you ambient dancers out there. The second track, A Golden Rush, includes the vocals and writing skills of Nelia Kit. 12” release on the Counter label.

There I was thinking about trying to help 'little' David August out by reviewing his record when I find out he has over 153K followers on Soundcloud and has performed to over 100,000 people. Popular lad.
His popularity doesn't help me like this less though. It's slick and atmospheric tech house that would probably fit into the big hole in sleek dance music that we know as Jon Hopkins. This is all beautifully warm synth pads, disembodied voices and forward moving beats that drive the thing along. The middle section of the six minute plus 'The Spell' is particularly lovely with some well Boards of Canada synths before some ravey swishes and bleeps up the energy levels for the big finale.
I imagine this is dance floor friendly (having not danced on a floor for many years) but what I do know is that it has a great late night atmosphere to it which is what I always look for in my electronic music. I'm impressed but I don't think Dave needs my help in any way.
