- Factory Photographs by HEXA

Lawrence English and Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) have done a remarkable job of creating a “sonic response” to David Lynch’s series of factory photographs. The sounds the pair have conjured, effortlessly transport the listener to locations mirroring the beautiful monochrome image that adorns the sleeve.
This is music for anyone that gets hypnotised by droning pipes, ticking machinery, blasts of steam and gets thrills from the clanging and clanking of a forge. Count me in. This is certainly reminiscent of, and should appeal to fans of David Lynch & Alan R. Splet’s classic Eraserhead soundtrack. It shares a similar eerie, occasionally unsettling, mysterious quality. Industrial dark ambient sound that’s something like a late night walk around the decaying Detroit factories in Robocop. I get the sense that this is what 70’s Sheffield sounded like; steelworks echoing across the city, into the night and into the ears of a fledgeling Cabaret Voltaire. Or perhaps the sounds of Finnish shipyards that inspired Mika Vaino.
The overall vibe is really quite tranquil, almost ghostly. It’s an authentic sound that manifests more like collaged field recordings of heavy machinery than something composed -- which is only really given away by the detection of the odd cymbal sound. Great stuff.
