8/10 Staff review, 06 October 2016

“I wanted to write music that both the child and adult would enjoy as most music for children is written by idiots with no taste in music. I have a background in electronic/space rock/Gamelan/Egyptian/techno so therefore the music I write is ok.” These are the words of the sole producer of Woodland Walk, Victoria Wilson. Serious wisdom there, just remember, if you want to make kids’ music, be sure to listen to a shitload of Hawkwind beforehand.

This elaborately-packaged CD from Patterned Air takes after the luxury-DIY approach of labels such as Time Released Sound to deliver homebrewed productions that combine acoustic and electronic elements into some kind of concept, all wrapped up in a smart package - this one has a feather in it. This time around it’s a woodland walk of course, but it’s a record initially for children with special needs to place them in different woodland encounters. It deliberately uses classroom instrumentation to create this childhood setting, combined with field recordings, beats, and synth tones from cheap Casios to the fabled VCS3.

Every track starts with a very BBC announcement of what’s coming up, as if you’re on a 70s nature cartoon. “Oh look, a badger”. It then builds to a relatively laid back beat, joined by different tones trying to imitate the subject, like a scuttling synth for the ‘Hedgehog’ or a groove that bonks along to draw the ‘Conkers’. The acoustic touches are nice and pleasant and definitely fit the setting, though the grating textures of the VCS3 don’t really blend all that well with their acoustic counterparts such as the recorder or xylophone. There’s one moment where it does work, and that’s the already mildly-distressing ‘Rain’.

I’ve lost all ability to judge music by this point, so I’ll say that this one goes out to the hauntologists.
