Released prior to his recent and extremely sad death, this is novelist-gone-songwriter Leonard Cohen's 14th studio album. You Want It Darker is not a question, and that is made very clear with the minimal title track having a low ominous choir and an imposing Cohen sounding closer to Laibach’s Milan Fras’ broken baritone monologues than a lounge crooner.

Produced by his son Adam Cohen, the sound is expansive yet sparse, crisp yet thanks to the melancholy vocals, dark and haunting and brilliantly done. It is an album of imminent death, regrets, and the staying power of true love on a level most of us can't comprehend without the years of experience to back it up. Leonard Cohen is one of, if not the greatest lyricist in popular music history, maybe surpassed only, but not always, by Bob Dylan. His style, the deep bass voice, accompaniment that straddles jazz, blues and rock and lyrical genius has no parallel, and the world is a sadder place without him.
