Guy Alexander Brewer’s project Shifted is standing at an interesting point right now. This is an outlet for properly dark and noisy sounds, but Brewer is also looking back to his previous drum & bass work as Commix. The pleasurable results, presented on Appropriation Stories, are heavyweight techno with dashes of noise and deconstructed breakbeats: intense stuff, released on Dominic Fernow’s Hospital Productions.

A few words on Shifted’s new bleak work on Prurient’s Hospital Productions imprint. Just got a couple of tracks at my disposal but this sort of monochrome techno is right up my alley. Imagine being lost on a fog bound hill, your feet trailing on the ground as you trudge through marshland. That’s what ‘Flatlands’ sounds like to me. It is panting techno with a sense of unease as fluttering percussion and dub inflected beats arrive and disperse. ‘Watchers’ is even more minimal with a ticking repetitive beat that increases in intensity with battering ram percussion and no discernible melody whatsoever. There's a whole eight other tracks but from the opening exchanges this sounds like excellent rhythmic underground techno to scare the living daylights out of those damn clowns.
