Leeds’ own Antony Beardsley is Dark Strands, and after releasing his first EP way back in 2013, he has been filling our ears with cleverly crafted slow paced dance music ever since. The Last Ride is no different, and combines slow rhythms with catchy and repetitive electronic harmonies. Available on Vinyl 12”.
7/10 Laurie Staff review, 26 October 2016
Dark Strands is a Leeds based producer man called Anthony who makes slow house so deep that you can’t see the bottom. Funky percussion taken direct from disco merges with rather more intense synth dirges to create a slightly confusing but party-ready whole. It’s all under the rule of massive kick / snare drums you see, so there’s no doubt that it’s that good-times music, but there’s a level of almost industrial abrasion and coldness that is slightly at odds with the funkier elements. The tempo is a bit below the standard 120 house staple, so think Detroit Swindle mixed with Throbbing Gristle. Breezy, but intense. Chill, but hard. I dunno.
