The 1997 return of the legendary oscillation-innovators Silver Apples is reissued onto vinyl for the first time ever. Beacon still has the wide-eyed sense of explorative magic that Silver Apples first announced themselves with, even if the rest of music had finally caught up with them by this point. CD / LP reissues on Chicken Coop.

Mr Simeon Coxe is probably the most hyped 70-something of 2016. Despite all the 60s/70s revivalist stuff going on, he’s quite deserving of the hype, seeing as he’s also the hardest rocking 70-something of 2016. Having seen him play recently, and despite his near motionless figure, I was amazed to hear the thick techno backdrop of his latest stuff on a big system which truly dwarfs the sound of Silver Apples of old.
Sure, Clinging to a Dream is a real divider, but it hits a lot harder and with more imagination than a lot of comeback synth records. There’s some dodgy Jean-Michel Jarre in the ‘00s, trust. He’s always retained that vital pop element alongside thinly veiled kraut influence, as is clear on this ‘90s return to the project Beacon, which like Clinging… is a one-man show from Simeon. It’s got those giddy anthemic numbers like the opener ‘I Have Known Love’ and ‘Hocus Pocus’, as well as the weird and wonderful freak-outs of things like ‘You and I’.
Fear not, The Simeon is still here. Most songs are only vaguely in a key, with all sorts of dissonant noodles whirling around the ears courtesy of his large bank of manually-tuned oscillators. It sounds fairly psych-y actually, thanks to some 70s-inspired production style engineered by none other than Steve Albini. Bloody Albini’s everywhere. He manages to set the record apart from the typical gooey production of the time anyway, retaining just enough rough edge without trashing the sound out as you’d expect from him.
Extra marks go to the groovier tracks with delicious drums like ‘Together’, ‘Lovelights’ and ‘Cosmic String’.
