MV (Matt Valentine) and EE (Erika Elder) have been partners in life and music for a good long while now: they know themselves, each other, and their sound inside out. Root / Void strays away from the heavier psych-jams they’ve often produced, instead rocking a more pastoral form of psychedelica. Beautiful and intimate stuff. LP on Woodist.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 13 October 2016
Right, pals I've just opened a record to review as I thought it was going to be brilliant but not only was the record not as good as I'd hoped but I ruined the sleeve taking it out of its casing. Please don't tell Phil ok? So with this new MV =EE album I'm just going off the couple of things I can find online but you know they are good anyway right?
Certainly 'Feel Alright' is a corker. This is the most melodic I've heard these guys, barely a guitar squiggle in evidence and a lovely downward descending chord progression that sounds like some Neil Young song or other. Truly lovely. AND it has really nice percussion and the vocals are dead nice., It's like skewed hippie Laurel Canyon pop. The other track I've got hold of is 'I'm Still In Love With You Love> Void' which does have twiddly psych guitars trying to disrupt everything but despite their best efforts they can't disrupt the spectral flow of their glistening sound. It crawls along, as slow as a Wayne Rooney change of pace but it's again a lovely hazy piece of grinding slo-mo psych. The other six tracks could be happy hardcore for all I know but going on what I've heard this is more patchouli scented folk/psych with delicious vocals and spangling guitars.
