Jerry Goldsmith has written scores for loads of hollywood films, including Gremlins, L.A. Confidential, and Hollowman. But his score for Planet of the Apes was one of his greatest works, tense and terrifying. His off-kilter choices of instrumentation emphasised the warfare of the film, and got him nominated for an academy award.

Great Cover illustration!! And Great center fold!!
The label on the records doesn't seem to have any relevance to the original film, it would have been nice if had.
Which brings me to the sound track.
I used to have the original sound track album years ago which contained the best extracts but not in the same order they appear in the film.
This double album contains all the music from the film in the order it is used in the film.
so is this a good thing?
The sequence named crash landing which wasn't on the original album,(but was used in the film)Is in a slightly different style to the rest of the score and doesn't sit well with the rest of the score, thus lowering the tone of side one.
This is probably why it was excluded from the original album.
Sides two to four are Brilliant!!!!!
So while its great to have the complete sound track of the film
I feel the exclusion of crash landing would better represents Gerry Gold smiths creative intention.

One of Hollywood's most prolific and innovative composers, Jerry Goldsmith truly surpassed anything that he had previously done with the score to the 1968 film. A ground-breakingly exciting composition, the music exudes mystery, danger, and otherworldly "terror" with its piercing strings, thunderous percussion, and simulated "ape" sounds. The music is a listener's treat to the magnificence of Goldsmith at his best. It would be several years later before he bested "Planet" with the Academy Award-winning "Omen" score.
