A Storm In Heaven by The Verve

Debut album from The Verve (back when they were just 'Verve"), remastered and piled in with a tonne of ridiculous goodies. Including all the tracks from their EPs before the album, two radio sessions, acoustic versions, a DVD of live and studio videos and even two unreleased studio tracks – South Pacific and Shoeshine Girl. I think they are allowed to call that a super deluxe edition. Note this is for the Deluxe CD package which is now out of print so you'll have to make do with some regular vinyl.

Not gonna do much for my Norman street cred this but I feel obliged to say a few kind words about this album. 'A Storm in Heaven' (along with those early 12"s) despite the singers following godawful attempts to persuade me otherwise remain for me some of the finest documents of indie/shoegaze these shores have produced. The reason it works so well is because it's full on band effort each member of which all make equally great contributions with special praise singled out for guitarist Nick McCabe. Ashcroft is only a bit part player here his lyrics thankfully are not centre stage and whisper it his delivery actually compliments the dreamy washed out feel throughout. It's taken me a while to make my peace with it because of the delusions of grandeur that came after but I now hold this up there with Michael Head and the Strands 'The Magical World' as one of the defining out of time psychedelic UK albums of the 90's.
