Karen Gwyer also seems to be pulled in two different directions. Sometimes she makes cerebral melodic electronic pieces with droney touches, other times (e.g. live), she blasts out ecstatic acid techno. Both forms of Gwyer are fantastic, and this 12” happily combines them. Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase is out on Don’t Be Afraid.

New Karen Gwyer already? Excellent. We’ve been served a tasty heap of beaty treats from KG recently, from the new age tripouts of Kiki the Wormhole on Public House to the harder-edged techno of the Bouloman EP on Nous Disques. This latest, named after the four stages of cell division (why is A level biology still in there somewhere??), finds a space in between the two, where the richly melodic meets the banging in glorious style on Don’t Be Afraid.
The A side track plays heavily on a sort of emotional trancey synth arp overlaid with the familiar offbeat hats and claps, but it never reaches that full-on intensity, instead switching the broken kick pattern around like trying to play basketball with a rugby ball. As always, it grows and dies out in spectacular fashion, with aching, throbbing pads whirling around underneath, though I’d recommend turning the bass up as for some reason it feels a bit thin on these tiny headphones. ‘For some reason’. After a brief Radiophonic-inspired interlude, it’s on to the big B2, which has a heavier Four Tet (Ocoras) / Blawan feel in the slightly swung distorted techno backdrop, offset by a rather sweet sounding chime chord that rings out occasionally.
