8/10 Ant Staff review, 08 September 2016
Young Echo Crew member Daniel Davies aka DJ Oa$is (FuckPunk) follows up his ‘Red X’ 12” for Blackest Ever Black with a limited edition double-pack for Berceuse Heroique. Comprised of two tracks; ‘Control’ and ‘Information’ each with a ‘Version’ counterpart spread across four sides of wax -- for maximum DJ friendly cut/ bass pressure.
‘Control’ (wonder if he’s a Burroughs reader?) is up first. Joining the dots between Jamaica, Berlin and Bristolian soundsystem culture via trace elements of digital dub, dark garage, minimal house, dub techno, hardcore, UK Funky and dubstep without adhering to the template of any of those genre’s. Dark, heavy, stompin’, dubby, and smoked out. Once dancers are comfortably locked into the groove, they’ll not be expecting the ravey stabs to be joined by an all consuming evil synth breaking out of the speakers like a phantom to devour them. Then back into the stomp with deep bass, razor sharp rattling snares and “Control” dread vocal. The ‘Version’ utilizes the core elements of the original mix, stripping things back slightly with a more ghostly, weed induced paranoia atmosphere.
‘Information’ has something of the mood of classic sci-fi Tech-Step/ Drum & Bass. Building from an initially spacious production with spliced breaks, menacing sub-bass and futuristic sound design - a particularly satisfying synth that fizzes like pure electricity. As more elements are introduced, like the chilling siren like wail, it becomes brilliantly intense.
Again the ‘Version’ is possibly a wee bit more stripped back and spooked sounding, dispensing with the siren like synth for a more subtle darkside creeper.
Quality gear throughout, but don’t take my word for it - hit the soundcloud player and preview these tracks in their entirety.
