Collaboration between Glasgow and Australia, Pussy Mothers throw you back to clattering 90s electro-disco. Opener Skirt consists of pot-and-pan percussion and whirring anologue synths, and almost sexual vocal lunges. As the EP expands onto more electro funk and soul territory with an undeniable disco groove.

The Number 1 EP by Pussy Mothers

9/10 Jamie Staff review, 16 August 2016

Pussy Mothers, then, are a two piece from Glasgow and Aus. I deduced this from the press release and should have left it there, really… Just don’t Google search them at work is all I’m saying. Fucking hell. Anyway… The ‘Mothers funk and clank all over the place. Opening with the sinuously twisting electro funk of ‘Skirt’ (with amazing bass synth and other whirrs) and moving through jams which took place at a spaced-out ‘Echo Party’ in a tenement flat, side A of this vibrant EP grooves like a mutha'. It concludes part one with a sexy slow-mo disco delight; ‘Get From In Front Of Me’ bobs, weaves and claps its way through the oddest percussive groove I have heard in a very long time.

I've just noticed this release is from the Optimo guys, which makes total sense. Like a cross between the spacier end of Francois Kevorkian’s productions and the slower, more grooving side of LCD Soundsystem’s finest efforts, ‘When I Get It Right’ encourages you to get up and shake your butt. “Move your feet side to side, move your feet front and glide…”, the Aussie woman exhorts as the bass and synths slide. It’ll sound great down your local disco on a Friday night. I wish I could be there. Closing the record, ‘Rap Machine’ works old-school electro beats into a delicious junk funk groove; a broken 808 rhythm and swirling antique analogue synth punctuated by fun-time samples and vocals do the do. Great record.
