The Bug gets busy with two of Grime’s most heavyweight microphone lords on this explosive 12” for Ninja Tune. Now I’m most definitely not an MC - but if I were; the two I would fear most in battle would most likely be D Double E and Riko Dan. Their use of language, flow, lyrics, and delivery is something of a human sonic weapon.
First up The Bug’s sticky, squidgy, acidic riddim squelches along, providing the perfect platform for D Double E’s voicing of ‘Box’. He unleashes a ferocious tirade, laced with venom and disses in good humour in his inimitable style - one that that almost makes the mundane sound profound. He truly has the gift of the gab. If you’re not one for vocals or fancy having a go with your mates spitting over it there’s an instrumental version.
Next up Riko Dan with some “Ice Cold Business” and he ain't joking. ‘Iceman’ has a huge deeply atmospheric sound, steeped in gloomy, smoked out paranoia. I have this cranked up to the maximum on my fairly puny home system and it’s giving me bass orgasms, so I can’t imagine what would happen if I heard this through a proper rig. It would probably explode me and I’d be just body parts leaving the dance on a stretcher. This is the Bug in damn fine form alongside Riko Dan who’s also on fire. What a pairing this two make - ranking alongside some of the Bug’s classic murder business collaborations with Flowdan, Daddy Freddy, Ras Bogle, Warrior Queen etc. Again there’s a useful ‘Version’ on this side but I could listen to Riko Dan chattin’ all day long.
