France are a trio with the unusual set-up of bass, drums and (wait for it) amplified, hurdy-gurdy! As you can imagine, that allows them to unlock proper minimal drone transcendentalism, especially given that they only perform unbroken single-piece sets This 45 minute show from Do Den Haag Church (previously issued as a 2009 CDr) is a real treat for those looking to tune in and drop out. Well when I read that the line up of this band was bass, drums and an amplified hurdy-gurdy then I knew I just had to listen to them and I'm glad I did.
There's just two tracks here (or actually one as the same track stretches all the way across the two sides of vinyl). The hurdy-gurdy produces a most satisfying drone that ebbs and flows and alternates across the forty odd minutes whilst the drums and bass keep things simple. This reminds me most of Tony Conrad and Faust's 'Outside the Dream Syndicate' LP with mesmerising tones and inflections but also it's like a smoother calmer Vibracathedral Orchestra. As the track progresses the tones coming from the instrument get more intense and the textures are always on the moving despite the rhythm section seeming to stay static.
Things slowly start to disintegrate with some wild scraping sounds and eerie buzzes making a truly unique record that is both soothingly familiar but a completely new take on drone music.
