Anxiety are a proper-hard hardcore band from Glasgow, and this is their debut release. They have the speed and ferocity of hardcore punk (9 tracks in 20 minutes: yep, that passes the hardcore test), but also the sonic-fuckedness of a lot of noise rock. Everything is messed-up and uncomfortable, and it's wonderful. Vinyl release on La Vida Es Un Mus.

Wheee! This is the hardcore you want: feeling and furious. Glasgow team Anxiety have made a garage-fucked s/t that will appeal, quite impressively, to both those who want a no-frills punking and those who live for gimmick. The effects central to many of the band’s tunes have a psychedelic tinge that blends, somehow and seamlessly, into their mix of catchy rhythmic pissings and heavily distorted guitars. It’s all here.

This is a discordant mess, in some ways, but between the feedback and heavily covered vocals are bona fide hooks, as on “The Worst”, with its nugget of a refrain (about, you know, being the worst). “Addicted to Punishment” sees chords flailing about in the wind, with a doubled up vocal fading away into a gurgle. And “Delayed”, whose guitars jangle and warp around the place for a noise-bitten intro like a wannabe Les Rallizes Denudes cut, eventually turns into an absolute favourite song of the year, lamenting and loathing the world and the self through the best lens: a catchy, compact verse. It breaks into chunkier, more affected choruses that do away with the explanations.

If you don’t mind, it’s very fucking good. It reminds me of a lot of noise fragments further afield from straight-up hardcore while still ultimately doing all the things a straight-up hardcore record can do to you. What a lucky coincidence or maybe it's not a coincidence maybe it's good work. File this one under A Record That Has Actually Excited Me This Year.
