The New Backwards was originally part of the 2008 Ape Of Naples box-set, but it now floats freely as a stand-alone release. Constructed out of a quantity of 90’s material originally bequeathed to Trent Reznor, The New Backwards contains all the classic Coil elements, from Jhonn Balance’s haunted vocals and spiritualism to messed-around-with deep samples. Originally a CD release on Coil’s Threshold House imprint with the vinyl edition being part of a box set with ‘The Ape of Naples’. It’s worth noting that the vinyl edition omits three tracks; 'AYOR', 'Backwards' and 'Fire of the Green Dragon'. If I’m honest that’s not a huge loss to anyone just picking up the vinyl edition. Personally I can quite happily live without those particular tracks as for me some of the elements haven’t aged well at all.
‘Careful What You Wish For’, ‘Nature is a Language’ ‘Copacaballa’ and ‘Princess Margaret's Man In The D'jamalfna’ are all keepers and make this worth owning for any Coil fan. If you’re a newcomer and deciding whether to go for this or ‘The Ape of Naples’ I’d recommend heading straight for Ape first then maybe give this a go later as Ape is far more coherent as an album where as this feels a little messy.
I get the impression that by the time this came out, it was more for the fans rather than wanting to communicate something musically. These are Christopherson's official final mixes and differ to the Danny Hyde mixes - which also has a different tracklisting and was released recently as ‘Backwards’ on Cold Spring.
