9/10 Ant Staff review, 15 June 2016

As with the forthcoming Pan Sonic album, ‘Mannerlaata’ is a soundtrack. In this case for a “74 minute lettrist film made entirely without a camera” by Finnish filmmaker Mika Taanila. The fact that this is a soundtrack and I’m listening without visuals really matters not, as the frequencies vibrate the air and into my body, they seem to resonate deep inside, right into the bone marrow.

Mika Vainio seems to work with an exclusive set of frequencies that cannot be generated by any other member of the human race. Every time I review one if his albums I find myself saying the same thing; to properly experience the sheer power and weight of these sounds, this demands VOLUME or you’re simply going to miss the microscopic details and the sheer force of the body rattling low end - the title translates to ‘Tectonic Plate’ which couldn’t be more appropriate for some of these tracks.

As with much of Vainio’s work this deals in extremes, sound which is barely there/ sound that couldn’t possibly be more present. These tracks generate a strange alienated feeling, colours rather than images and have a physicality/ immense presence rather than any discernible narrative. The man is in fine form, but then he always is. Now bring on that Pan Sonic album!
