8/10 Ant Staff review, 08 June 2016

DVA Damas have shed most of (but not entirely) the Rock & Roll/ Post-Punk/ New Wave sound of their debut self titled 10” EP and ‘Nightshade’ LP for Downwards in favour of a modern Techno/ Synthwave/ EBM sound for this limited edition 12” EP.

Without Taylor Burch’s vocal ‘Clear Cut’ could well be mistaken for a Powell production. It plods along nicely with precision tooled percussion and lots of sounds sweeping in, out and across the mix. It’s not a million miles from some of what Factory Floor get up to, but in my opinion far superior. Check the video - I ain't lying. Clocking in at just under ten minutes it’s broken roughly in half where things simmer down and strip back to the gristly bassline and glitched up vocals then kicks back in with only fragments of processed/ fx laden vocals. ‘Do I’ is basically a short minimal/ sparse remix/ edit of some of the components from ‘Clear Cut’.

Underneath we get ‘In The Clear’ which reduces the tempo to a sexy, sinister, narcotic stomp and increases the sub bass pressure. There’s also a useful Radio Edit of ‘Clear Cut’ on the B-side. All tracks are pretty much variations on a theme so you could probably have a bit of fun with two copies on the olde wheels of steel.
