Cico Beck and Markus Acher of the Notwist have teamed up as You + Your D. Metal Friend to create something of consistent, delicate beauty, in “Sonnier”. Tickled analogue synth, gently tinkling percussion under soft mallets and warm, undulating bass all combine over the course of the six ‘Sonniers’ on this record of arresting loveliness. There are intricate details which, it becomes apparent into ‘Sonnier 2’, bear listening to on a good pair of headphones. The plucked, rolling bass and insect-like synth on the second track combine to particularly mesmeric effect.

The track runs into the third Sonnier with its gently picked acoustic guitar, pretty xylophone and woozy synth, which draws side A to stunning close. Sonnier 4 ushers in side B with hypnotically malleted metallic chimes and glockenspiel, softly rhythmic and beautiful as a clear blue sky in June. ‘Sonnier 5’ opens with reverberating drone and analogue bloops which soon give way to layer upon layer of gamelan-like percussion and hushed incantation. Hypnotic and gorgeous. Sixth and final Sonnier concludes the record with something vaguely hauntological and nostalgic, but far more listenable than that sounds.

Wobbly synth, keyboard and plucked guitar combine in the most elegiac way to evoke the sound of a summer’s evening bygone, or perhaps yet to come. You never know.
