Evil In Oslo by Hedvig Mollestad Trio

Hedvig Mollestad Trio are led by Hedvig Mollestad (surprise surprise), who is properly trained in jazz music: here though, she leads her trio into darkly funky territory that is more influenced by heavy psychedelic rock, somewhere her gnarly guitar chops sit very comfortably. Evil In Oslo is a live document spread over 2 LPs, on Rune Grammofon.

8/10 gbar 22nd April 2017

Recorded at two separate performances in her native Norway, 'Live In Oslo' is raw, but ultimately sophisticated jazz-rock noise is quite dazzling in its instrumental and rhythmic dexterity as the trio blasts through 70 minutes of mesmerising rock’n’roll. Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen is a superb, yet underrated guitarist, who can churn out pile-driving riffs and also offer up atmospheric explorations throughout her performance. Her partners, bassist Ellen Brekken and drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad are both similarly skilled, as they manage to find a healthy balance between straightforward rock and openness for improvisational freedom. 'Live In Oslo' will satisfy the needs of those who love their music as complex as possible, while also providing the needs of those who wants to headbang.
