Kate Carr is an accomplished field recordist, and the enticingly-titled I Had Myself A Nuclear Spring is what she extracted from the surroundings of the desolate French town of Marnay, which comprise a flooded river and a power plant. She sets of the resulting mixtures of electro-hum and water-drip with careful melodic tones and even guitar. A good and involving listen on Rivertones.

9/10 Laurie Staff review, 25 August 2016

For this one, Kate Carr retreats to possibly the most depressing French town ever, where the river frequently floods, no shops or cafes exist, no one is there, and the National Front just got voted in. Still, she uses the river to her advantage, recording all the birds, bees and sloshings before embellishing them with melodic tones and flecks of guitar.

It sits quite (un)comfortably between the chill and ominous. The first track gives the impression that it’ll be a Francisco Lopez style subtly-augmented recording project, centring on many nesting birds being mildly perturbed by some sizzling electric crackle. It then takes those base elements and places super-slow drifting melodics underneath, with low rumbles, singular blips and listlessly plucked lone guitar also helping to fill the space.

It’s a really enjoyable and texturally diverse listen that manages to capture beauty and desolation at the same time. Immensely detailed and refreshing to the ears, I Had Myself a Nuclear Spring is Carr showing you how much of a good time she has working with sound, in spite of its tension. I’d compare it to some other artists but I’m useless so can’t. The Volume Settings Folder waking up on the wrong side of the bed? Hmm. Must try harder.
