Lowtide are an indie-rock four-piece from Melbourne, Australia. Their sound has been likened to a combination of Slowdive, Spacemen 3 and Sparklehorse which seems a bit of an odd mix to me…..anyway, on their self-titled debut they definitely have tunes in abundance. They have been championed by 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq.

New shoegaze for 2016 that is worth a listen. There’s plenty of bands doing this kinda thing these days but to do it well you need to write decent songs and on the opening ‘Whale’ Lowtide do just that with the sort of grandiose piece of dreamy shoegaze that sounds like their near namesakes Slowdive trying to fill a stadium with balloons. The chorus is pretty majestic and glacial.
Like a lot of shoegaze groups they spend plenty of time texturing their guitars but tracks like ‘Held’ are much more pop infected than anything Slowdive attempted. Mainly however I’m enjoying the moodier side of this LP, on ‘Blue Movie’ the cavernous drums and sky scraping guitars are overlaid by the sort of whispery vocals that should be trademarked with the words Rachel and Goswell and I suppose that’s my main issue with the album is that ‘Whale’ apart it’s just so derivative. ‘ Wedding Ring’ for example IS the House of Love’s ‘Christine’.
The band do better when they slow things down and there are moments that show that with a bit more ambition and daring they could make their own ‘Pygmalion’. For now though this is a pleasantly distracting grab bag of shoegaze tones.
