Louis Johnstone’s second LP for Opal Tapes arrives some four years after his well received ‘Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight’ album from the label. During the time that has elapsed, this modern Musique concrète practitioner’s sound has definitely evolved - but really I’m not quite sure what I’m supposed to tell you about ‘Central Heating’. Other than it’s a trip into some fucking weird zone that holds practically nothing in the way of obvious narrative - which is exactly what appeals to me about the field recordings/ found sounds/ tapes/ collage of WANDA GROUP.
One minute you could be a particle of dust being sucked into a hoover, the next a piece of fecal bacteria left on a Morrisons shopping trolley by some unhygienic bastard that doesn't wash their paws after dropping the kids off at the pool - the germ transported to car keys jingling around in the ignition on the journey home until it reaches its eventual demise gurgling down a plughole.
You’re never quite sure where you are with this album, but there’s little clues, or markers scattered throughout. WANDA GROUP is the leader of the new-skool continuing work within the blueprint laid down by the likes of Pierre Henry, Pierre Schaeffer, Bernard Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari etc. but with his own eccentric and idiosyncratic approach which gives his sound personality/ character that makes it sound very specifically WANDA GROUP despite the disparate elements and source material he pulls together and processes.
As always great stuff and heartily recommended for adventurous ears.
