The source material for this release was a set of analogue modular synth recordings made in Detroit, mastered by the famed Ron Murphy. Then, while playing Live In Japan, cv313 pulled apart those recordings, carefully treating and reassembling them in response to the ecstatic movements of the dancers. Beyond The Clouds / Beyond The Sequence [Live In Japan] is out on echospace [detroit].

Culled from a live session in Japan and coaxed out of modular synths, custom effects units and other analog devices assembled by hand, cv313’s sounds echo and reverberate out of the headphones and between my ears much as they would’ve done to the delight of the dancing crowd that night. Separated stereo sounds dissected, replaced and dubbed-out frequencies create a deep, spacey atmosphere to make shapes to. I can almost smell the dry ice and see the pulses of strobed white and blue light.
Side A of the vinyl, ‘Beyond the Sequence’ begins at a low-volume and rises out of the background hiss, the white noise continuously mutating and curling around the dub structures like wisps of smoke as a groove steadily and stealthily develops. On the flip, ‘Beyond the Clouds’ swirls synth stabs and effects in the mix against a slow-building, marching pulse, the percussive effects syncopating to create a perfectly dreamy Echospace experience. All in all, it’s another trippy and damn fine cv313 release.
