Joana Serrat plays an Americana-infused kind of grown-up pop music: the choruses sweep grandly in a radio-friendly manner, but the instrumental textures (provided by members of Slowdive, Cowboy Junkies, The Wooden Sky and more) feel like something more. Cross The Verge, Serrat’s third album, is out on Loose Music.
8/10 Richard Customer review, 1st February 2017
This was the first Joana Serrat record I came across, my interest piqued by the inclusion of Slowdive's Neil Halstead who offers co-vocals on 'Cloudy Heart'. Being on Loose I kind of knew what to expect, but this is more folky than straight up Americana. Joana's voice is gentle and warm and quite affecting, particularly when singing 'please watch my lonely heart' on the opening track.
The mood picks up nicely though - this is no naval gazing record. 'Cloudy Heart' works really well and is rather uplifting, and along with 'Tug of War' which has a sense of urgency about it, manages to keep the record from being too gentle at times. This could have been a problem on 'Oh, Winter Come' which seems too fragile at first, but reveals itself as a thing of beauty upon close inspection, and like this record on the whole, rewards repeated listens. Worth checking out for sure.
