The new album from Mamiffer is a major work of probing, dark minimal beauty, with a sound pallette expanded with the help of collaborators including Eyvind Kang (the go-to strings man for dark experimental types including Sunn O)))) and Joe Preston of Thrones. Nice duotone printed sleeves for both CD and 2LP editions, on SIGE.

8/10 Staff review, 04 May 2016

I like Mamiffer. Some droners are cosying up for a long hibernation; this duo are the animal that just woke up from it. Some records wanna cover you over like a big fuzzy duvet; Mamiffer are a wooly animal, moving about their icy surface and scaling beyond the mountains. An active band who appreciate that soundscaping involves its fair bit of work in the field, their music straddles a sweet spot between ambience and balladry -- on ‘The World Unseen’, they create a brooding and waiting pop record.

While Mamiffer haven’t necessarily changed on this record, their twin sounds have become more pronounced, and now mingle with one another more curiously, as if trying to size one another up. The guitar tones shake the earth like, uh, Earth, while the long melodic paths they set -- sometimes through sinewy arrangements, and often through fragile strings and vocals -- recall the journeying drone of Natural Snow Buildings. Faith Coloccia’s vocals tether the otherwise wayward songs to strong narratives and her work for pianos and keys provides a way back to the path of least resistance -- essentially, her penchant for singing a song, and singing it to someone, provides the anonymous feeling ‘The World Unseen’ with some much needed character interaction.

At first, this record might seem like a straight line, a simple if uncompelling collection of half-songs -- the more it unfolds, though, the more lost and fragmented it becomes. Piano and vocal piece “Mara” cuts into the record with a sudden renewed purpose, a gorgeous and heart-breaking track reminiscent of Julianna Barwick that sounds like someone getting a second wind after giving up completely. It’s followed by the scattered ash ambience of “Domestication of the Ewe”, a blast of distortion that comes from nowhere and billows straight into the abyss. It becomes clear, hearing these pieces, that Mamiffer are doing vignettes: piecing this confused record together would only be an insult.
