Yoni & Geti are Yoni Wolf of Why? and Serengeti, and they’ve not been heard together since 2011. But now Testarossa is here, and it just so happens to be a narrative-heavy record, the pair telling the tale of 2 characters in a troubled relationship. This is told through deft flows and inventive beats, just as you’d expect from Mr Why?. On Joyful Noise.

Hi Yoni. Been a while. Hi Geti  - been about 5 seconds.

Whereas Serengeti has been everywhere of late, we’ve not heard a squeak from Yoni Wolf (aka Why?) for some time.  Well here they are together for their second collaboration (never heard the first) and it’s made up of the sort of hip-hop/indie-rock cross breed you might expect. What is less is expected is this is part of a long term script concerning a fictional couple, Davy and Maddy. All lyrics are about the lives of the couple  - kind of like the history of Terry and June in song.

I’m three songs in and already I’ve heard three tracks that have made me glad I got out of bed this morning particularly ‘Madeleine’ and absolutely lovely gentle dollop perhaps in the style of the Hymies Basement collab Yoni did with Andrew Broder. Yoni’s voice is so soft here over the tuneful keyboard led melodies before Geti comes in with some sweet voiced singing. Enjoying too ‘Allegheny’ which is pure Why? with Geti’s fast lipped rhymes added in. Geti does verses, Yoni choruses. The old one two. I’m convinced Geti sings the words ‘let me eat this scone’ I hope so. It’s scrattier than the recent Why? records (which I’ve actually found a bit polished) so I’m happy that it favours inspiration over getting the sound just right. Geti is much nearer than a standard rapper than Why? but still he’s way left field. i almost fell off my chair when I heard the word ‘scone’ again on ‘Lunchline’.

The record will appeal to fans of older school Anticon and is worlds away from the bigot rap they have released recently with Antwon. A worthy collaboration that highlights the strengths of both artists.
