Bert Jansch’s fifth album for the Transatlantic label was Nicola, one of Jansch’s fullest-sounding records as a result of some luscious string arrangements on some of the tracks. As ever, Jansch’s deft acoustic guitar and rich voice carry his folk material perfectly. This reissue on Sanctuary has been remastered from the original tapes.
8/10 Jack Customer review, 18th July 2016
Nicola has some of the most atypical tracks in the Jansch oeuvre, such as the outright pop song "Live Depends on Love,". The title track is a guitar and flute duet, with a nice Renaissance touch. "Come Back Baby" is Jansch playing and singing the blues, as is "Weeping Willow Blues." But then "A Little Sweet Sunshine" has an electric guitar on it and proves that this album might be the most diverse mix of musical stylings he ever recorded. It's Bert Jansch from a vintage year, "summer of love" 1967 - how bad can it be?
