Relapse records have always been at the cutting edge of extreme metal and rock, and the new album from Tombs continues this tradition. All Empires Fall is an ambitious collection of black metal full of pounding riffs, hoarse and heavy vocals and some newly included keyboards for texture and atmosphere.

As most of the extreme metal subgenres reached adulthood and maturity seemingly eons ago, it's refreshing to hear a band like Tombs cause such fuss in listeners over the perception of genre. They're by no means avant-garde, but Tombs' are certainly uncompromising in the way they've blended their influences and stood by the resulting style. Savage Gold doesn't stand head and shoulders above Tombs' past achievements, nor does it feel like the actualization of this 'post-blackened-hardcore' hybrid they've mustered, but it holds its own amongst the year's other offerings, and outdoes the majority of them in terms of its sheer visceral intensity.
