This was the first “proper” full-length album release from HOMESHAKE, following a smattering of fine cassettes, initially issued in 2014. Weirdly-tinged bedroom indie-R&B is the name of the game, with main man Peter Sagar slinking around his songs like someone with love on his mind. In The Shower is out on Sinderlyn / Captured Tracks.
9/10 Harris Allen Customer review, 12th April 2016
The first full album from Peter Sagar, of Mac DeMarco fame, manages to escape that shadow with a great, groovy and unique record. Of course the DeMarco similarities are present, the album is guitar heavy with breezy riffs and is comparatively short; most apparent though is the same laid back vibe that runs through the album that contributes so heavily to Mac’s success. Otherwise however this is definitely a Homeshake record; intercut with game show and movie samples the album takes a stranger, headier and trippier approach than any of Mac’s albums to date.
With a play time of 29 minutes Peter manages showcases his excellent songwriting with 10 perfectly formed and memorable songs. The first 30 seconds of opening track She Can’t Leave Me Here Alone Tonight set the tone of the record with hazy vocals calling to ‘try to relax’ over breezy chords, the effect is ever so slightly odd, laid-back and easily cool which accurately captures the feeling of the rest of the album.
All remaining 9 songs continue with a unique brand of super easy ‘sort of’ love songs that explore different textures and tempos while never deviating too far from the sound that is quite quickly identifiable as his own. Perhaps lacking a little variety this record otherwise marks a strong debut for Homeshake, who creates his own sound in the wake of Mac that is as worthy in its own right.
