There’s a certain kind of challenge to composing the soundtrack to a franchise like James Bond: how to be creative and stand out while also acknowledging the weighty past? Thomas Newman seems to know, as his Spectre OST sweeps and swoops around in exciting ways, nodding occasionally to the crucial John Barry / Monty Norman theme. Double LP on Decca.

- Spectre - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Thomas Newman
6/10 Jack 1st April 2016After being somewhat interested and somewhat disappointed with Thomas Newman's Skyfall soundtrack, I had basically the same reaction to his Spectre soundtrack. Newman has a knack for introducing a track with interest, even excitement; but it rarely if ever gets off the ground with an actual theme. Compare this with John Barry's earlier James Bond music, which is full of memorable themes. I challenge anyone who is familiar with Skyfall or Spectre soundtracks to be able to hum an actual tune from them. Still, this music is far from awful.
