Julianna Barwick returns with her follow up to 2013’s joyous Nepenthe. On Will the experimental songwriter still uses ambient music, but the sounds are denser. After Barwick got to experiment with a prototype Moog synthesizer, she decided to incorporate synth textures alongside her looped vocals. The results are predictabilty gorgeous.

I am only into the third track on 'Will', Julianna Barwick's fourth full album to date -- wait, only her fourth? That's what I thought, but yes it's true -- and I am utterly spellbound. Her soft, lulling vocal on 'Beached' is not looped, this time; this is one of a handful of the more lineally progressing songs on this beautiful album. Yes, I said 'beautiful': for this is genuinely the case. I don't bandy these words around willy-nilly, you know.
So we have songs featuring looped vocal, songs with non-looped vocal, songs with lush textural synth and songs with gentle piano. 'Wist' is the soundtrack to your deepest, haziest and yet most revelatory of dreams -- if you could just capture it in your hands for a second longer to inspect it in the light of day, that is. As with Grouper, it's sometimes hard to tell whether that voice is pulling you and drawing you toward your doom or your nirvana. That's the nature of the siren's call.
For right now, however, I'm leaving this album here in the office whilst I can; and because, frankly, I have to. I seem to have used up my allotted time. But I'll be back, Julianna. Oh yes, I'll be back. Very soon.
